Recently I was reading over the marketing spiel for a prominent direct sales tart company. I won’t name them, but it rhymes with “Gentsy”. They claim some reasons to go with tarts over candles is that there is no soot involved with tarts. This is true, however, with a properly trimmed wick there is also no soot with a soy candle like the ones we make here at Burn and Groom.
The second reason they gave for choosing tarts over traditional candles struck me at my core a bit more. They say there are no flames involved with tarts and that is true. But for me, a flame symbolizes so much. Since the dawn of time fire has aided us by providing warmth, food, protection, and a myriad of other essentials.
These days, fire is almost a bygone entity. We have electric heaters and stoves, floodlights in our yards, and no need for forging weapons or the like. A candle can bring fire to light, serving a useful purpose once again, filling your home with wonderful fragrance. Just staring at a single small flame for a few moments can bring about a sense of calm and reconnect us to our more animal past where fire was as important to us as water and air.
So let the humble candle have a place in your home and honor the legacy of the flame. It’s the least we can do.
