Why do we here at Burn and Groom make onlycharcoal soap? Why would we forgo all the pretty colors and swirls and dollops of pizzazz to create black bar after black bar of soap? The answer is that activated charcoal is amazing. And very, very black.
First, a quick rundown: Activated Charcoal is created by slowly burning hardwood, coconut husks, or bamboo into charcoal. We choose hardwood as it is produced from eastern American timber and not from who knows where in the case of coconut and bamboo charcoal. The charcoal that is produced is THEN super-heated to over 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit in the presence of C02 to further break down the internal surface of the charcoal. This increases the absorption capacity by creating an internal network of even smaller pores making it two to three times as effective as regular charcoal.
What all that scientific talk means is that each little grain of activated charcoal we put in our soap has a figurative TON of nooks, crannies, craters, and pits to trap dirt and oil. If one could unfold all the microscopic surfaces in one teaspoon of activated carbon it could add up to the size of a football field! The best part is that YOU don't have to do anything extra when you shower with our soap; the soap does all the work FOR you!
Just wash as you normally do. As our soap glides around your skin, the charcoal traps all the smutz that regular soap can leave behind. You don't have to wait for anything to be absorbed or activate or break down. In essence, it's just tiny dimpled rocks grabbing on to gunk they come into contact with then being rinsed away. It couldn't be any easier!
Simply put, there is no better way to get sparkly clean then using activated charcoal soaps. Combined with our handmade soap base, which retains all its naturally created, moisture - grabbing glycerine and dispenses with any chemical additions or replacements, it leaves YOUR nooks and crannies feeling brand-new!
Is activated charcoal safe to use every day?
Yes! our activated charcoal is the consistency of powdered sugar. It won't exfoliate your skin to the point of redness or irritation like soaps with heartier pieces of charcoal or pumice in them (i.e. GoJo, Lava soap, etc)
Will your amazing soap stain my tub?
We have found through using our soap every day that it does not stain our tub. or sinks. Glazed ceramics and stainless steel are NOT porous surfaces, so there is nothing for the charcoal to embed itself to. That being said, things like towels and bathroom rugs may stain. When in doubt, test for yourself. We have found through spilling charcoal on the clothes we wear when making our soap that even the straight charcoal powder comes right out in the wash.
Is your activated charcoal food-grade?
Indeed it is! There are many other benefits using activated charcoal in other areas of your life, so food-grade charcoal is relatively easy to find. Unlike charcoals you might find in industrial settings, our charcoal is not chemically treated to hasten the activation process. In fact, here is a very thorough review of the activated charcoal we use from Coal is the new Black.
